IO-Link basics for encoders - Intelligent communication rethought

What is IO-Link?

IO-Link is a globally standardised I/O technology (IEC 61131-9) that enables consistent, digital point-to-point communication between sensors, actuators and automation systems. Unlike classic analogue interfaces, IO-Link not only transmits process data, but also diagnostic and parameter data - via a simple, unshielded standard cable.

Why IO-Link for encoders?

Encoders with an IO-Link interface - such as the WDGA series from Wachendorff - offer a number of advantages for modern automation solutions:

  • Simple integration: Plug-and-play via standardised IODD files
  • Central parameterisation: scaling, direction of rotation, preset values can be set directly via the control system
  • Real-time diagnostics: Status monitoring and error detection during operation
  • Future-proof: Compatible with all common fieldbus systems via IO-Link master

Technical highlights of the WDGA IO-Link encoders

  • Singleturn and multiturn technology with QuattroMag® and EnDra®
  • High resolution: Up to 16-bit singleturn and 43-bit total resolution
  • Robust design: Ideal for use in harsh industrial environments
  • Flexible scaling: Adaptation of the output values to the application

Advantages of IO-Link at a glance

  • Reduced wiring costs thanks to standard cables
  • Fast commissioning thanks to automatic device detection
  • Minimisation of downtimes thanks to simple device changes with automatic parameterisation
  • Transparency down to sensor/actuator level for predictive maintenance

How IO-Link works with encoders

An IO-Link encoder is connected to the control system via an IO-Link master. Communication is bidirectional, which means that the encoder not only sends position data, but also receives configuration commands. Parameterisation is carried out via an engineering tool or directly from the PLC.
